I hate to say this, but I could “identify” with him. Maybe Forester’s authorial asides were attempts at a more knowing, go, postmodernist style of writing where the readership is invited to participate in a limited way in the narrative by responding to asides and being directly addressed by the author.
Also, as a man of humble social standing, he cannot afford to risk offending the influential Wellesley clan by dallying with her.
