Fairly elementary, but good as far as the limited content on offer went. Although grid systems are the foundation for almost all typographic design, they are often associated with rigid, formulaic solutions. Design principles such as negative space, The Law of Thirds, area of emphasis and elements such as line, shape, form contrast, color are dealt with in this book.
I learned more from those. Essential reading for epam designers. Her earlier book, Geometry of Design p. She has written extensively epam graphic design and design education.
The transparent overlays on real examples were a nice touch. A very strange book. People who bought this also bought. Princeton Architectural Press Amazon.
The great amount of examples given and the see-through grids overlaying pages contribute really well to the Skip to main content. The most magnificent part is the construction of the book itself with meticulously drawn grid-overlays of respected designs. Using a step-by-step approach, the text shows how grids can become a means of dynamic communication.

There are better books on this subject. A great intro into the concepts of design. Any designer, educator, or student will benefit greatly from this elegant slim book, chock-a-block full of colorful examples, helpful vellum overlays, and Elam’s insightful analysis.
