The basic idea of the book is that the Carolingian Empire managed to combine a number of conflicting trends through the strong personality of its leader He also contrasts Charlemagne’s empire with what he believes a Christian empire should look like implying that perfect Christian empires once existed.

He claims that the veneration of relics began in the 9th century ficbtenau though Eastern Christians also were into the practice. Fichtenau attempted to demythologize Charlemagne’s achievements and draw out many of the contradictions and fundamental instabilities within the empire he created.
