Hating normal people, contemptuous of his Princess, losing his faith in his Prince, the warped little man gets his taste of power in a war waged against a neighboring principality, poisons the enemy as they treat for truce.

I found it to be a really chilling tale of the dark part of our nature. At some points in the novel, especially towards the end, it appears that the dwarf could be the embodiment of the dark sides of the prince himself, and not a real, separate person.

One way to interpret the book is to see the Dwarf as a symbol for the ruthless and bellicose spirit that a medieval prince would be required to possess at times, but to do so would be to deny the full humanity of the Dwarf himself a humanity that the Dwarf, in turn, would deny.
