At the end of the day there’s simply no reason to state that guys armed with ‘ long swords could provide superior support to nieghboring archers than those armed with nellis long spears or ‘ long pikes.
I thought the ability of Long Bow and Cross Bow to destroy Knights on ties in close combat was supposed to reflect better close up factors, including stakes for the archers.
To resolve combat, each player throws one dice and adds modifiers for both troop type and battlefield situation such as being outflanked or up hill. Solid Blade provides side support for Solid Bow. Assigning it to other troop types doesn’t. Extremely well used and has major flaws, which may be too numerous to mention.
Also note that in one of the rare major defeats of English archers the ground was baked too hard for them to use their stakes.
