He was correctly rewarded with a Hugo nomination. It was one of those rare occasions where a book settled at the perfect length; anything longer, and it would have had to have been written very differently and anything shorter wouldn’t have given an adequate impression.

I had to push myself through it Dark Universe has an dar, premise poorly or at least boringly executed. This novel from put the reader in a post apocalyptic world that exists underground in complete darkness. Views Read Edit View history. I also liked the way he handled his myth making, translating light and radiation into spiritual concepts and making Cobalt and Strontium etc.
I like Galouye and found Dark Universe to be a fun read. I only leave one star off because the writing is not truly great. There’s a problem loading this menu right now. Thanks — it did indeed lose to Stranger in a Strange Land.

Dark Universe by Daniel F. Dec 28, Steve Walker rated it it was amazing Shelves: The way the characters have developed their own religious dogma and customs based on limited knowledge of their history is fascinating.
I agree with other reviewers that some characters lacked depth. Interesting premise but by the end I was left unsatisfied and filled with question like, if they had the technology to amplify sounds using a machine, why had no one ever taken some of the rocks and plant material durable enough to make clothing out byy and start a fire.
