The protagonist is a disillusioned veteran of the First World War who abandons his wealthy friends and lifestyle, traveling to India seeking enlightenment. He is married to a German woman, described pretty much as frumpy, and they have a little dog, Fritz. There were from twenty to thirty. When he went into the dining-room britush was already full. Ashenden shares his cabin with an American business man who will not shut his mouth!

But since in so crowded a resort for the Lyonese like a good dinner you never knew what inquisitive ears were pricked up to catch any useful piece of information that might fall from your lips, they had contented themselves with talking of indifferent things. It might mean defeat or victory. It all looked poor and mean in that trim hotel room, with its suite in highly varnished rose-wood. What a gem this is! In Maugham’s case, embarrassment over having possibly violated national security would be joined with personal pain over having to destroy his own work. But when Miss King passed him on her way out of the dining-room it seemed to Ashenden that her mask of a face scowled.
Ashenden could not but think he was lucky to have wriggled out of the fix he had found himself in that afternoon. He went out with his secretary. That was what the doctor thought. Ashenden waited for the detective to proceed.

He was exceedingly voluble, and the words tumbled out of his mouth tumultuously, like marbles out of a bag. Somerville implicitly, I suppose?
